calvaryMany people may not know who Patrick Cassidy is. To be honest – and this is pretty terrible – I’d heard the name but I wasn’t amazingly familiar with his work until I popped onto Google and read that he’s had a working relationship in and out of film with Lisa Gerrard Continue reading

Grand Piano

grandpiano

Piano virtuosos are often associated with some kind of mental instability and often downright madness. Perhaps it comes from a common understanding that genius demands certain sacrifice. But one has to wonder – isn’t this turning into some kind of cliche? In Eugenio Mira’s GRAND PIANO, Elijah Wood plays Tom Selznick Continue reading

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

When Hans Zimmer was announced as a replacement for James Horner for scoring duties of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, I announced a complete boycott for this film and its soundtrack. The new composer has become somewhat of a synonym of what many older fans dislike most about modern film music. And while he might have been director’s Marc Webb’s first choice in the first place, things looked gloomy indeed. Continue reading

The Movie Studio Logo Music Mix

One thing I’d like to do more regularly for Entr’acte is to do more things with actual sound – for a website about music the focus is generally on words – so here’s a mix I cooked up last night based on a conversation a couple of weeks back on Twitter about movie studio logo music. I thought it may work well as a kind of guessing game as well, so have a listen and see what you recognise – there’s forty-one in total, including variations.

Apologies for the volume not being consistent, Audition betrayed me.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, Vol. 1

Producing a science documentary might be one of the oddest things Seth MacFarlane ever did in his career. Having been largely known for his satirical animated series (FAMILY GUY and AMERICAN DAD!), he surely seems a very unlikely person to shepherd such a project. The original program included Carl Sagan himself as a host and proved to be a significant success – both with critics and audiences alike. Now, 34 years later, we are treated to this sequel and early word of mouth has been largely positive. Previously, Vangelis shared the airtime with several classical composers, however this time, the scoring duties were handled over to Alan Silvestri, who tackled the series on his own. Continue reading

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

It’s often said that comparison is unfair and that a work should be able to be judged on its own, away from preconceptions and any thoughts of what has come before. But does that become invalid when the work in question is a sequel or part of a larger connective piece? Take Henry Jackman’s score to THE WINTER SOLDIER, the latest Marvel Studios explod-o-rama and the newest CAPTAIN AMERICA adventure. Continue reading

The Right Kind Of Wrong

You might look at the album cover or poster for THE RIGHT KIND OF WRONG and think it looks pretty generic and that it probably isn’t worth your time. You might be right about the film – which is about a divorcee who falls in love with a bride-to-be and tries to “win her heart” – and while I haven’t seen it, it doesn’t look particularly appealing. However, Rachel Portman’s charming score is certainly worth a gamble. Continue reading

After what seems like an age, John Powell is back. After making his name (and influencing a whole genre) with his scores to the Bourne movies, and the universal acclaim of his music for HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, he’s been quiet for the last year but now he’s returning with two scores for animated productions. But while …DRAGON 2 will be coming later this year, first we have his score to Blue Sky’s RIO 2. Continue reading

Entr’acte Is Down

Tags

For those of you aware of Entr’acte, welcome. For those who have just discovered us, you are also most welcome. Tell your friends about us if you please.

The reason for this blog – “Entr’acte Is Down” – is a frustrating one. Basically, on our normal website, Entractemag.com, we featured a guest post by Spencer Hickman, who is the head honcho of Death Waltz Recording Co, on the forthcoming Record Store Day. Stupidly, I didn’t have the foresight to recognise the traffic demands this would place on the site (I should have, one of our previous big hits was an exclusive reveal of a DW release) and as such the site crashed and burned due to bandwidth issues.

Because of this, I decided to move the site to a new server with a new hosting package. This subsequently killed everything further due to a site migration not working properly and WordPress’ export function losing all of our posts from this year. At this moment I’m still trying to get the site back up and running, but I’m have some serious issues that are causing me to look at the site’s future in terms of format and medium. In the meantime, I have set this blog up just to post things, because it’s frustrating not having an outlet for our work out there because of technology issues.

So check it out and shout about us if you like our work, and remember, don’t eat the fish or steak.
